PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent excess fuel injection by gaining carburetion time of fuel through injection of the fuel around an intake top dead center, and by reducing fuel adhesion to a cylinder wall surface. SOLUTION: In this direct injection engine provided with a fuel injection valve 9 which directly injects the fuel to a combustion chamber 3, a cavity 8a for holding fuel spray from the fuel injection valve 9 is formed to a piston crown surface, and at starting, the fuel is injected from the fuel injection valve 9 in a timing in which almost all amount of the fuel enters the piston cavity 8a around the intake top dead center.
