PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an operation method for initial firing, which makes a stable operation start early while inhibiting a furnace body brick from receiving thermal damage during heat-up after initial firing. SOLUTION: The operation method for initially firing a blast furnace after charging coke onto timber piled up like a grid shape from the bottom of a blast furnace and charging ore and the coke onto the top of the coke, comprises installing a protective refractory in the furnace side of the furnace wall brick applied between a tuyere and a bosh portion, so as to satisfy a relation expressed by the following expression: 3.6×10<SP>3</SP>×(α<SB>b</SB>/d)≤1.00 (wherein,α<SB>b</SB>represents the thermal conductivity (m<SP>2</SP>/s) of the protective refractory; and d represents the thickness (m) of the protective refractory).
