PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an effective and economical method which, in the case of adsorbing an organic matter-containing raw water, such as a cyanide-containing underground water, by using an ion exchange resin or a chelate resin, can stably maintain the resin life for a long time, increase the adsorption efficiency of the resin, and prevent excessive treatment in a pretreatment from being performed. SOLUTION: In the method for treating the contaminated water containing cyanide, as the pretreatment before a treatment for removing total cyanide by bringing the cyanide-containing water to be treated into contact with the ion exchange resin or the chelate resin, the weight ratio of TOC to the total cyanide in the water to be treated is adjusted to≤5, and/or the TOC in the water to be treated is adjusted to≤10 mg/l.
