PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for manufacturing a glass preform, which can appropriately control the heating temperature of a glass particulate deposit regardless of the deteriorated state of a furnace core pipe. SOLUTION: In the method for manufacturing the glass preform comprising: storing the glass particulate deposit 2 in the furnace core pipe 6 of a vacuum heating furnace, and then sintering the deposit so as to transparently vitrifying it, the surface temperature of the glass particulate deposit 2 or the glass preform is measured through an opening 6a provided at the side face of the furnace core pipe 6. Further, the temperature of the furnace core pipe 6 is measured at the time of previous production of the glass preform, and the heating temperature is controlled by changing the setting of heating for this time production of the glass preform, based on the temperature of the furnace core pipe 6 and the surface temperature of the glass preform at the previous time.
