PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical scanner and an image forming apparatus in which the uneven light quantity in a main scanning direction on an image plane is suppressed. SOLUTION: In the optical scanner, a light beam having a broader width in the main scanning direction than the width on the reflection surface of a deflector in the main scanning direction is made incident on the deflector, a part of the incident light beam is reflected and deflected on the reflection surface of the deflector, and the deflected light beam is focused on a face to be scanned with an optical means including a transmission type optical member. Further, the device is characterized by the fact that the deflecting direction of the light beam incident on the deflector is substantially the main scanning direction. The scanner is characterized by the fact that the deflecting direction is substantially the same as the main scanning direction. Even in the image forming apparatus having a plurality of light sources and forming a plurality of scanning lines with the light beams from the plurality of light sources, the deflecting direction of the light beams emitted from the respective light sources and made incident to the corresponding deflectors is substantially the main scanning direction.
