PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process for manufacturing a polyimide film which is freed from strain and anisotropy of the film and has excellent dimensional stability. SOLUTION: A solution, which has dissolved a polyamic acid that is a precursor of a polyimide or a polyimide in a solvent, is applied on an endless belt or a drum continuously and dried until a self-supporting nature develops, then the both ends of this gel film are fixed, and first, the distance between the fixed ends is established so that the film width may be made successively smaller. Next, after the distance between the fixed ends is set so that the film width may become successively larger, the distance is further set so that the film width may dwindle or become constant.
