The column (1) consists of a main part (10) with slide channel (2) and a slide (3) moving in the channel, to support a longitudinal bar (8). A locking device (6) locks the slide, when in extended position, against unintentional movement into the channel. The device is located at the top end of the main column part and is pivoted about a horizontal axis (12). This permits the device to be moved into and out of a gap (11), which is located between the upper edge of the main part and the lower edge of the longitudinal bar. The locking device consists of two connected curved metal plates, and has a fork-shaped end, which partially engages around the slide.
