Speed regulator, or adaptive cruise control (ACC) system, for a motor vehicle has a sensor arrangement (10) for measuring vehicle operating parameters or the distance to an object in front and a control unit (12) for regulating the vehicle accordingly. A stop function provides for automatic stopping of the vehicle. Once stopped the vehicle can only start or move again when the driver issues a movement command and an activation signal exists.
