PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a versatile starting device applicable to a fluorescent lamp lighting device capable of surely starting a fluorescent lamp with a construction with low cost, automatically relighting the lamp when the lamp is put out due to an instantaneous voltage drop of a power supply, having a ballast and the fluorescent lamp with different rated output. SOLUTION: The fluorescent lamp lighting device has a starting device lighting the fluorescent lamp. The starting device comprises a first rectifying means, a first serial connection unit of a first resistance means and a semiconductor switching element, a second serial connection unit of a second resistance means, at least one Zener diode, and a second rectifying means, a first capacitor, and a control means for controlling the semiconductor switching element. The control means comprises a first transistor for controlling the semiconductor switching element, a second transistor for controlling the first transistor, a second and a third Zener diodes, a third, a fourth, and a fifth resistance means, and a second capacitor.
