A photoelectric conversion element including a composite pigment and an n-type semiconductor, characterized in that the composite pigment is formed by chemically bonding together a plurality of component pigments having mutually different excitation levels to thereby form an electron-moving straight chain or branching structure, the straight chain or branching structure is held at one end thereof by the n-type semiconductor and is free at the other end, and, in the straight chain or branching structure, the plurality of component pigments are arrayed in a sequence that allows their excitation levels to gradually decrease from the end held by the n-type semiconductor of the straight chain or branching structure toward the above free end.
