<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a negative electrode material providing a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery excellent in a charge-discharge cycle characteristic and a high-rate discharge characteristic. <P>SOLUTION: This negative electrode material for a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery is formed of composite particles wherein a coating layer formed of a solid phase B is formed in a part or the entire part of a surface of each core particle formed of a solid phase A. The solid phase A is an amorphous alloy phase containing Si and at least one kind selected from a group comprising Sb and P or B.
