PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the run stability and run durability of a magnetic recording medium having a high recording density. SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium 10 is provided, which includes a magnetic layer 2 made of a ferromagnetic metal thin film on one major surface of a nonmagnetic support 1, a back layer 4 on the other major surface different from the side for forming the magnetic layer, and a lubricant layer 5 on the uppermost surface of the side for forming the magnetic layer, in which lubricant parts 5a having the dimension of 10-80μm in diameter are scattered like islands, in the lubricant layer 5, and in which one or more lubricant molecules with respect to the thickness direction exist on a flat area 5b in the lubricant layer 5 other than the lubricant parts 5a.
