A method and device for controlling a wiper, capable of smoothly dealing with a sudden change in rainfall conditions occurring in a rainfall discontinuity environment experienced by a motor vehicle passing through a tunnel. A wipe condition control portion (42) determines that a motor vehicle has entered in a rainfall discontinuity environment. In response to the determination, for a low level rainfall that is lower than a predetermined rainfall level, the control portion (42) sets a wipe level to a lower one, and for a high level rainfall that is equal to or higher than a predetermined rainfall level, the control portion (42) sets the wipe level to a higher one. A rainfall level generation portion (32) senses adhesion of raindrops and determines a rainfall level. A wiper drive signal generation portion (48) determines the operation of a wiper based on the rainfall level determined by the rainfall level generation portion (32) and on the wipe level set by the wipe condition control portion (42).
