PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize a video display device capable of providing a color video free from uneven color by using a hologram for an eyepiece optical system. SOLUTION: The video display device is equipped with three LEDs (11) emitting R light, G light and B light, a diffusing plate (12), a condenser lens (13), an LCD (14), a prism (15) and a reflection type hologram (16). In the device, the light from the LED (11) is modulated by the LCD (14) to be video light and the video light is guided to observer's eyes by the prism (15) and the hologram (16). By setting a numerical aperture for the light from the LED (11), wavelength band width, the diffraction half value width of the hologram (16) and the direction of the LED (11) with respect to the LCD (14) considering the wavelength selectivity and the angle selectivity of the hologram, the sizes and the positions of exit pupils (17) for the R light, the G light and the B light are made to agree.
