PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a seat slide device excellent in adaptability to a long rail, which is capable of driving a runner both in forward and backward directions, and securing smooth working performance even though a motor and a locking means are provided together. SOLUTION: The seat slide device uses a flexible main traction member interlocked with a motor 14 arranged in a member on the seat side, which can be advanced/retracted, as a drive transmitting means 16. An extended end on the forward rotation side 16-1 and an extended end on the reverse rotation side 16-2 of the traction member are locked and connected to a floor respectively at the same line as the front and the back ends of guide rails 20 (L, R). The seat is configured to be securely slidable forwards and backwards according to the relative synchronous advance/retreat movement of each extended end interlocked with the forward and the backward rotation of a motor. The operation control over a lock-off means for lock-off/lock-on of locking means 22 (L, R) is interlocked with the operation of a start switch with switching 2 positions allowing selective start of the motor between forward rotation and reverse rotation.
