PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image scanner for preventing occurrence of black stripes wherein the operability of its ADF is enhanced with respect to an image forming apparatus capable of reading an image without causing the black stripes and forming a recording medium for recording an excellent image. SOLUTION: In the image forming apparatus with the image scanner wherein the ADF is provided to a lower part of a reader unit, inverting a read means of the reader unit carries out an upper side reading (book reading) and a lower side reading (ADF skimming-through reading mode), an image is read through a slit in the skimming-through reading mode, a shutter for opening / closing the slit is provided, and the slit is ordinarily closed by the shutter and the image is read by opening the shutter in the skimming-through reading mode, a thin and long hole is formed at a prescribed position in the main scanning direction, and the image of a moving original is read through the hole to provide the automatic draft feeder at a low cost with excellent operability and to prevent occurrence of a defective image such as black stripes.
