PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thin-film magnetic head in which recording can be improved by making recording magnetic field gradients as sharp as possible. SOLUTION: A return yoke layer arranged on the trailing side of a magnetic pole layer is provided to the thin-film magnetic head, the width W3 of an exposure surface 13AP of a lower TH regulating part in TH regulating parts constituting the return yoke layer is equal to or greater than the width W1 of an exposure surface 20P of the magnetic pole layer (W3≥W1) and is less than the width W4 of the exposure surface 13BP of an upper TH regulating part (W3<W1). Since a portion (magnetic flux J) of magnetic fluxes discharged to the outside from the exposure surface 20P is made to flow to the exposure surface 13AP while slightly expanding in a width direction, expansion of the magnetic flux J is suppressed when recording. Then, the recording magnetic field inclination near an air bearing surface is made sharp to improve recording performance. COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI |
