PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for industrially advantageously producing phthalazine. SOLUTION: The method for producing phthalazine comprises reacting anα,α,α',α'-tetrahalogeno-o-xylene represented by formula (I) (X is a halogen atom) with hydrazine or its salt in the presence of an organic solvent. Consequently, phthalazine is efficiently and inexpensively obtained from theα,α,α',α'-tetrahalogeno-o-xylene. The method is industrially advantageous.
