PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader where a carriage smoothly and stably travels by eliminating vibration and backlash caused when the carriage travels. SOLUTION: The slider (leg part) 35 of the carriage 3 is put to freely slide on a pair of guide rails 13 installed on the base of a housing 1, and the carriage 3 is provided to travel along the guide rails 13. By energizing the carriage 3 upward by a compression spring 36 made to intervene between the slider 35 and the carriage 3, buttons 30 and 31 attached to the upper surface of the carriage 3 are made to elastically abut on a platen glass 10 so as to keep space between the carriage 3 and the platen glass 10 constant. The slider 35 is formed of oleo synthetic resin such as oil impregnated polyacetal, and the surface of the guide rail 13 is constituted of a stainless sheet 15, and the slider 35 is slid on the sheet 15.
