The aim of the invention is to provide, during a quick tightening of a tool onto a machine tool, a small amount of play between the tool (2) and the fastening device (1) in a non-operating position and/or during operation. To this end, a fastening device is provided with at least one projection of a lock, which can be actuated without the use of tools and with which the fastening device can be detachably connected to the tool. When in the locked position, the projection (410) of the fastening device extends over an associated lock face (220) of the tool, and the tool body is axially secured and held in a rotationally fixed manner. Structural measures are taken both on the tool as well as on the fastening device in order to keep the axial distance, which is required for establishing a positive engagement between the fastening device and the tool, small between the support (390) for the tool and the at least one projection (410) of the fastening device and/or in order, during operation, particularly in the event of external forces such as braking or tilting forces acting upon the tool, to produce an additional force that holds the tool down on said support thus enabling the positive engagement to be maintained and stabilized.
