The internal combustion engine (28) comprises at least one auxiliary power unit for generating electric power and/or for at least temporary generation of electric power for operating an electric heating element (24) attached to the engine block (26). The heating element is used for quick heating of the internal combustion engine before and during its starting phase. The heating element is fixed to the outside of the engine block and has a thick film resistor. An independent claim is also included for the method of operating an internal combustion engine.
