To strip the insulation from flat strip conductors (8), where a number of metal conductors are embedded within a plastics ribbon, a continuous moving belt (2) acts on the insulation surface. The belt has a cladding of plastics waste, or is of leather, to give a friction rubbing action, while the strip conductor is pressed (6) against it at the belt deflection roller (4). The belt surface action softens the plastics by friction heat and strips it away through the relative movements of the belt and the strip conductor. The detached insulation (12) is removed, leaving exposed metal conductors (10). Any clinging insulation is removed from the belt by a scraper.
