PURPOSE: A method for transmitting and receiving messages using a DTMF(Dual Tone Multi Frequency) signal in the middle of telephone conversation is provided to transmit and receive messages in the middle of telephone conversation by using a DTMF signal. CONSTITUTION: If a speech path is connected between two terminals(301), the called terminal confirms whether a DTMF signal is received from the calling terminal(302). If a DTMF signal is received, the called terminal judges whether the received DTMF signal is a numeral(303). If the received DTMF signal is not a numeral, the called terminal judges whether the received DTMF signal is an initialization appointment code for text transmission(305). If the received DTMF signal is an initialization appointment code for text transmission, the called terminal transmits the initialization appointment code to the calling terminal(306). At this moment, the communication network connects an SMC(Short Message Service Center)(307). The called terminal receives a short message from the calling terminal(308,309). If the short message is completely received, the calling terminal transmits a short message to the called terminal(310).
