<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording medium managing device for relating a recording medium to a recorder without requiring inputting and for keeping the latest association of the recording medium with the recorder, and also to provide its method. <P>SOLUTION: The device includes: a system controller 150 for generating relation information relating the recording medium 140 to the recorder (digital camera) 100; an outer interface 130 for recording and updating the relation information; and a display part 170 for notifying the relation information. The relation information for relating the recording medium 140 to the recorder 100 is generated, based on information concerning a recording device 100, which is stored in a ROM 160, so that the input work is not required. Whenever the recorder for using the recording medium 140 is changed, the relation information is updated.
