PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optically active compound having a single asymmetric center, large spirally inducing force and polymerizable functional group, to provide a liquid crystal composition containing the same, to provide a polymer of the same, and to provide liquid crystal display devices containing the polymer. SOLUTION: The optically active compound is represented by the general formula(I), e.g. a compound of formula(e-5). This compound has a single asymmetric center and large spirally inducing force, therefore this compound has only to be added at relatively small amounts to a liquid crystal material compared with those with conventional cases in inducing a spiral structure in the liquid crystal material, thus leading to a lower risk of impairing the properties of the liquid crystal material. Furthermore, because of having the polymerizable functional group, this compound can be polymerized, therefore being useful e.g. for making cholesteric films or liquid crystal display devices containing the polymer.
