PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent an original from bending by a roller carrying the original during reading the original by an ADF, thereby avoiding the deterioration of image quality. SOLUTION: This image reader previously stores shading correction data for a white reference plate in a shading RAM 24a and shading correction data for white original papers (1), (2) and (3) different in thicknesses in shading RAMs 24b, 24c and 24d. It reads an original by an ADF (step ST1). If the read original is, e.g., paper (1) (step ST2), it reads data out of the shading RAMs 24a, 24b (step ST3), sums up the shading correction data for the white reference plate and those for the paper (1) to take shading correction data, and corrects the shading of the read original (step ST7).
