PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a stable thin film magnetic head and a substrate for the thin film magnetic head in which hard disc failure or instability in characteristics for the magnetic head due to rise in temperature do not occur. SOLUTION: On an Al<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>-MC based (M is at least one kind selected out of Ti, Nb, Si) ceramic substrate, an insulation layer comprising an almina film of crystalline substance with not less than 60% by volume is arranged, wherein the thermal conductivity for the alumina film is not less than 5W/mK.
