PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a polyoxyalkylene derivative capable of reacting with an amino group of a physiologically active substance under a condition of pH 5-7 in an aqueous solution, to provide a production method for obtaining the polyoxyalkylene derivative, to obtain a physiologically active substance modified with the polyoxyalkylene derivative, and to provide a method for modifying the physiologically active substance. SOLUTION: The polyoxyalkylene derivative is represented by formula (1) (wherein R is a 1-8C alkyl group; AO is a 2-4C oxyalkylene group; (n) represents 10-2,000 as an average mole number of added moles of the oxyalkylene group; X is a hydrogen atom, a 1-4C alkyl group or a group capable of reacting with amino group, mercapto group, an unsaturated bond or carboxy group).
