PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a preparation method whereby a phenol resin containing a low-molecular component, such as a phenol or a binuclear compound, in a low content and having a narrow molecular weight distribution is prepared with a high yield without worsening the work environment. SOLUTION: The preparation method for a phenol resin comprises reacting a phenol with an aldehyde containing at least a formaldehyde polymer in the presence of an organophosphonic acid as a catalyst.
