<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process and an apparatus for sterilizing (or disinfecting) fluid media in particular liquid containing microorganisms and/or viruses (for instance, food, dairy products, fruit juice products, chemical products or pharmaceutical products, vaccines for viruses, active substances or proteins produced by genetic engineering, active substances or proteins from a transgenic animal or plant, blood plasma, products from plasma) by ultraviolet irradiation and heating, which is reliable and gives minimum damage to the products. <P>SOLUTION: In the continuous process and apparatus for sterilization and, if appropriate, virus inactivation of fluid media 1 by means of combined application of heat treatment 2, 3, 55 and a UV irradiation treatment 4, the heat treatment 2 of the fluid media is carried out at a sterilization temperature of 40-135°C and the UV irradiation treatment at irradiation density of 5-300 W/m<SP>2</SP>. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI |
