PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a biphenyl compound useful as an intermediate for the production of a medicine, and a method for producing the same. SOLUTION: This biphenyl compound is expressed by general formula (I) (wherein, R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP>and R<SP>3</SP>are each H, a halogen atom, a lower alkyl, a lower alkoxy, hydroxy, cyano or the like). The method for producing the compound comprises a process of performing the reaction of a compound expressed by general formula (II) (R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP>and R<SP>3</SP>are each the same as the definition shown above) with a compound expressed by general formula (III) (wherein, X is a halogen atom or a substituted sulfonyloxy) in the presence of a base and an aryl coupling catalyst.
