<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a low cost and speedy pattern detection method without any complicated processing such as inverse Fourier transform in an image processing by which a registered image is retrieved from an input image. <P>SOLUTION: The pattern detection method comprises a transforming step, discretizing step, discrete Fourier transforming step, calculating steps, and sensing step. In the transforming step, rectangular coordinates of the registered image and input image are transformed into logarithm/polar coordinate respectively. In the discretizing step, discretizing is performed in a given sampling period. In the discrete Fourier transforming step, the transformation is performed with a discretized registered image and input image. In the calculating steps, calculation of a phase limitation composition is performed on the basis of the registered image and input image which have been discrete Fourier transformed. Calculating a corrected input image is performed after multiplying a complex conjugate to the input image to which the discrete Fourier transforming is performed. Calculating a correlation value is performed with the corrected input image and the registered image.
