PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of installing a tatami mat heating appliance, which does not mar the elasticity and comfortable feeling of a tatami mat per se, and imparts good heat retaining properties to the tatami mat, and to provide a heating tatami mat. SOLUTION: The method of installing the tatami mat heating appliance in a room in which ordinary tatami mats are laid, includes a tatami mat lifting step, a tatami mat reforming step, an electric wire laying step for laying electric wires to be connected to the outside, and a tatami mat re-laying step. Herein the tatami mat reforming step is comprised of a step of separating a tatami mat cover from a tatami mat substrate; a step of embedding connectors in an upper surface and side surfaces of the tatami mat substrate, and cutting a guide hole or a guide slot in the tatami mat substrate, for connecting the connectors together; a step of superposing planar heaters on an upper surface of the tatami mat substrate and connecting the heaters to the connectors arranged in the upper surface of the tatami mat substrate; a step of superposing a metallic-powder-containing rubber sheet on upper surfaces of the planar heaters; and a step of placing the original tatami mat cover or a new tatami mat cover on an upper surface of the metallic-powder-containing rubber sheet to restore the original appearance of the tatami mat.
