The mechanical transmission system for a bicycle has pedal arms freely movable through a vertical bore in the chain wheel axis. A guide wheel is provided on both ends of each pedal arm, of which one always runs on a guide rail on both sides of the bicycle. The guide rail on the left hand side of the bicycle is fastened directly on the frame of the bicycle, and the guide rail on the right hand side is positioned between the chain wheel and pedal arm, and also fastened on the frame.
