PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a video display unit capable of reducing a time and a trouble in setup work for remote control related functions, and to provide a setup method for the video display unit. SOLUTION: Remote control codes for switching on/off power sources of external equipment 21, 22 are transmitted to the external equipment 21, 22 successively for each setup code, and changes in states of the external equipment 21, 22 corresponding to the transmission are detected by monitoring changes in video signals. When a change of a power source from an on-state to an off-state or from an off-state to an on-state is detected, it becomes clear that that external equipment can be controlled by a group of remote control codes comprising a remote control code used when the change is detected. Taking this into consideration, correspondence between each external equipment and each setup code is automatically detected, and setup processing for the remote control related functions is automatized.
