965,191. Selective punching. SPERRY RAND CORPORATION. Feb. 6, 1963 [Feb. 16, 1962], No. 4845/63. Heading B4B. [Also in Division G3] Apparatus having a mechanical output provided by a spring-loaded piston 18 makes use of a pure fluid switch 20 which discharges to exhaust 30 until the arrival of a pressure pulse at a control nozzle 31 when it switches the discharge to an outlet 19 and actuates the piston 18 after which the build-up of pressure in the outlet 19 causes reversion of the discharge to the exhaust 30. The chamber 22 of the switch is shaped, and recesses 28, 29 may be provided, so that the switch is normally bi-stable. As shown, the apparatus is adapted to punch a card 10 in response to signals picked off a magnetic tape 11 by a reading head 12 which, through an amplifier 35, controls means 33 for producing a pulse of pressure fluid in the nozzle 31 for each pulse on the tape. The means 33 may comprise piezo-electric flow control elements, a flexible diaphragm to generate pressure waves in the conduit 34 leading to the nozzle 31, as in Specification 950,792, or a movable plate capacitor.
|
