METHOD FOR TREATING ACHE BY ADMINISTERING 24-HOUR ORAL OPIOID FORMULATION EXHIBITING RAPID RATE OF INITIAL RISE OF PLASMA DRUG LEVEL

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an oral sustained release opioid formulation. SOLUTION: Patients are treated with the 24-hour oral sustained release opioid formulation which, upon administration, provides an initially rapid opioid absorption such that the minimum effective concentration of the opioid is more quickly achieved. The sustained release opioid formulation contains an effective amount of at least one retardant material to cause the opioid analgesic to be released at such a rate as to provide an analgesic effect after oral administration to human patient for at least about 24 h, and is characterized by providing an absorption half-life of 1 to about 8 h.
