The safety device has a monitoring system for detecting persons and/or objects in the vicinity of the escalator or moving walkway, provided by a number of capacitive sensors (9) adjacent the base (3) or the balustrade of the escalator or moving walkway, e.g. a series of linear sensors spaced one after the other.
