PURPOSE: A method and a device for compressing image data are provided to extract index patterns corresponding to color information of received image data at a pattern DCT table, and to extract DCT coefficients, then to perform a quantizing/coding process by using the DCT coefficients, thereby being widely applied to image compression fields of real-time calculation. CONSTITUTION: A user detects index patterns by using Mahalanobis distances(S300). The user obtains DCT coefficients for the index patterns, and configures a pattern DCT table with the DCT coefficients matched with each index pattern(S302). If image data is received(S304), an image compression device extracts index patterns corresponding to color information of the image data(S306). The image compression device extracts DCT coefficients corresponding to the extracted index patterns(S308), and performs a quantizing/coding process by using the extracted DCT coefficients(S310). |
