<p>A process for disinfecting an area such as a building (26) or mail processing system including the steps of connecting a sealed area and the system for a desired time. By selecting the concentration of ozone and time period to kill spores, while minimizing damage to materials from the ozone, one is able to decontaminate the building (26) rapidly and inexpensively. The process may further include the step of illuminating interior spaces and/or the air circulated from the area with ultraviolet light (46), and/or the step of adjusting the relative humidity to a desired level. A system for disinfecting an area includes a generator (36) for generating ozone, a detector for measuring the concentration of ozone, and a regulator for controlling the generator, wherein a disinfecting concentration of ozone can be achieved and maintained within the area.</p> |
