<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image processing apparatus capable of accurately separating regions independently of the density of an original background by detecting a density level of the original background and setting a threshold adaptive to the background density so as to apply discrimination processing to the regions. <P>SOLUTION: When the image processing apparatus receives image data (S1), the image processing apparatus detects the background density of an original on the basis of the image data (S2). The image processing apparatus varies a threshold of a region discrimination arithmetic formula in response to the background density of the detected original (S3).
