PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a magnetic recording medium having satisfactory corrosion resistance and excellent cupping characteristics. SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium has a shield layer 2 film-deposited on one principal surface of a non-magnetic substrate 1 of a long shape by a facing-target type sputtering method and consisting of a silicon nitride film and a magnetic layer 3 film-deposited by a vacuum thin film deposition technology. When cupping in the width direction of the medium is defined as a and the length of the width of the medium is defined as w, the absolute value of a/w is specified to be≤0.05.
