PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a bearing steel which has excellent rolling life characteristic and can cope with the recent severe specifications by reforming≥80% of Al<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>in the structure into MgO-Al<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>, in the bearing steel. SOLUTION: In the bearing steel, the ratio of pieces of MgO-Al<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>to pieces of the whole oxide-based inclusions in the structure, is not less than 80%. This bearing steel is produced by using a method with which molten steel having the composition for bearing steel is melted, and Mg alloy having≤0.1 mass% Ca content is added into the molten steel and successively, Al is added, or a method with which the molten steel composed of composition in the bearing steel is refined by using CaO-Al<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>-MgO based slag having≥5 basicity and Al is added to the obtained molten steel as deoxidizing agent.
