PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image display medium capable of rewriting by light irradiation, free of degradation thereof due to repetitive image formation, and capable of forming a high-definition high-quality image and to provide an image forming method. SOLUTION: The image forming medium is obtained by forming a photosensitive layer comprising microcapsules containing at least photochromic compounds or microcapsules containing at least photochromic compounds and a binder material on a supporting substrate. The image forming medium using two or more photochromic compounds different from each other in the maximum absorption wavelength in a colored state as the above photochromic compounds is subjected to at least a step of allowing all the photochromic compounds in the photosensitive layer to color by irradiation with ultraviolet light and a step of selectively decoloring each photochromic compound by irradiating a prescribed region with visible light in a wavelength region corresponding to the maximum absorption wavelength of the photochromic compound in the colored state.
