<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an air cleaner constituted so that the service life of a filter can be prolonged and the noise produced when a blower is driven can be made low by arranging an auxiliary mechanism of dust collection at the preceding stage of the filter to reduce the dust collection load to be imposed on the filter. <P>SOLUTION: The airflow to be dust-collected is sucked in a dust collecting space (15) through each of slits (19) as suction ports is changed into a circulating airflow going along the inner peripheral surface of a cylindrical plate (17) by a rib (19e) arranged on each of the slits (19) so that the dust in the sucked airflow is collected by the action of the centrifugal force generated during the circulation. The dust in the sucked airflow is also collected by the electric dust collecting mechanism which is composed by using the surface of a ventilation plate and the inner peripheral surface of the plate (17) as negative electrodes and arranging positive electrodes to each of which high voltage is impressed near each of the slits (19) in the space (15).
