<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an engine control system which offers prompt startup of cranking by a starter generator at the time of starting an engine, thereby materializing excellent startability. <P>SOLUTION: When stopping an engine, a power generation load of a starter generator is increased to apply load torque to an engine during drop in rotation. A piston is stopped in the area E on the topmost dead center side from a compression start point a which requires starting torque of the starter generator.
