PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve productivity by shortening time up to starting grinding without damaging a workpiece. SOLUTION: This grinding apparatus has: a polishing unit 3 having a grinding wheel 324 for grinding the workpiece W, and a grinding unit feeding mechanism 5; a grinding unit position detecting means 6; a contact detecting means 4; and a control means 10. The control means 10 operates at a first feed speed up to a feed speed changing position where an interval between a grinding surface of the grinding wheel 324 and the workpiece W reaches a prescribed interval; operates at a second feed speed slower than the first feed speed, and faster than a grinding feed speed up to detecting contact between the grinding surface of the grinding wheel and the workpiece before work by the contact detecting means from a first feed position; and operates at the grinding feed speed up to a grinding finishing position, after detecting the contact between the grinding surface of the grinding wheel 324 and the workpiece W before the work, when moving the grinding unit 3 in the grinding feed direction by operating the grinding unit feeding mechanism 5.
