PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an innovative input device which is best suited for small and multifunction equipment and capable of inputting Japanese words etc. in quick and simple operation. SOLUTION: This input device for portable equipment has a rotating dial which freely turns, and the input operation is performed by pressing down the rotating dial in positions along the plurality of directions. The rotating dial has a detent function and an aligning function. The input operation of the rotating dial is performed by pressing down the dial in the positions along the plurality of directions, e.g., four directions of vertical and lateral directions. By combining e.g., a vertical and lateral four-directional switch function utilizing the rotating dial with an input function by the clockwise rotation and counterclockwise rotation of the rotating dial, various input operations are realized.
