The piston for an internal combustion engine has a radially encompassing cooling passage formed in the piston crown and provided with an inlet and outlet for the cooling medium. The cooling passage has rising and falling sections in such a way that through it the cooling medium is accelerated from the inlet in the direction of the outlet. Consequently, the cooling passage is constructed to extend in an approximate saw-tooth form. The cooling passage has the rising and falling sections in its upper part and/or in its lower part.
