PURPOSE: A device and a method for preventing illegal software duplication using a portable USB(Universal Serial Bus) storage are provided to judge licensed software by storing an initial maker, a product name, a serial number, and an application program in the portable USB storage, operating the program based on the stored data, and judging software execution on the portable USB storage. CONSTITUTION: A USB connector(31) is connected to a USB port of a computer. A USB driver(32) controls communication between the computer and the portable USB storage. A memory(40) stores data by the communication with the computer. A power display lamp(33) displays operation power of the portable USB storage. A write-protecting switch(34) protects the section used by the user of the memory. An oscillator(35) generates a master clock of the USB driver. The memory comprises a security section not written/erased/modified by a user, and storing the maker, the product name, and the serial number, and a general memory section storing the application software and the data of the user.
